Summers here: camping, gardening and swimming

We’ve had a few weekends away recently although with all the issues getting the boys to sleep G and I think we may not go away again until they’re teenagers!

The first was a family camping trip over the Melbourne Cup long weekend. We returned to the bush comp site on the Goulburn River that Luke and G camped during the fathers/kids camp trip. Luckily we ran into some of the families from that trip and then we pitched our tent on the edge of a large group of 13 kids and 8 adults! Luke was in his element and Alex as the youngest tagged along after everyone. It was gorgeous weather and our boys loved swimming in the river. The only issue was the 2 hours it took to get them to finally go to sleep. Sleeping in the close confines of a tent has issues too. Luke spent the night hard up on the edge of the tent and Alex alternated between trying to lie across our heads or snuggling up to Luke and pushing him even further into the wall. We realised that we need to start talking with Alex more about what’s going on as the day we were leaving he got hysterical when G was packing up the tent.

I’ll keep reporting on their bond as it gives me a constant source of delight. Recently Luke decided that he would go to sleep at the same time as Alex and would even sleep in the same bed together. As I suspected that was going to be impossible and we all agreed (except Alex who looked hurt) after a half hour that it was hopeless and separate beds were needed.

I’m being more careful to buy things in pairs now to stop some of the awful fights the boys have. A recent hit purchase was their own gardening gloves and a morning planting herbs. Luke chose a strawberry and carefully waters it every few days. Alex like Luke will happily pull chives from the pot and hang out in the garden chewing on them. Their chive breath can be overpowering at times.

Alex has finally moved into the bilingual stage. Just last weekend I noticed he was saying “la” as in there and whilst I was busy celebrating his first French word he quickly started saying “peur” as in scared. He has a few more English based words as well although is still fond of pulling you where he wants you and lots of finger pointing to communicate with us.

At a recent weekend in Rye when we were blessed with fabulous weather Luke decided that the boogie board or the “surf” was his and was prepared to spend hours at the beach floating around on it. He really wanted to bring it home. Luke has always been so at home at the beach that I’m pretty sure he’ll be on a real surfboard as he grows up.

Alex has been consistently using the potty for a quite a few weeks now. He likes to do his morning poo in it and sometimes requires a fresh potty so he can check he’s completely done. Whilst he still does pee pee in his nappy later in the day I can see a day in the not too distant future where we could be finally rid of nappies.
