G and I were so excited a few weeks ago as Luke seemed on the verge of saying “au revoir” as his first French word (well that is if you don’t count Papa). He had the sound and the inflection right and even knew when to use it. But then… he came home from childcare one Thursday and it’s been “bye” ever since.
At his 18 month check up with the Child Health Nurse she asked all the usual development questions and gave Luke gold stars for everything. He has about 12 words he uses intermittently which is within the range for his age but some chatterboxes have a lot more. She was impressed that Luke fully understands both English and French. Not that G and I test him but we can both give him directions (“go and get your shoes” or “put this in the bin”) in either language and he responds. G is speaking to Luke exclusively in French and when he occasionally watches TV it’s a French DVD.
His other vital stats are: weight: 11.6 kilos which puts him just under 50% of boys his age and 82cm tall which puts him at exactly the 50% mark compared to boys of his age.
We’ve noticed a big change in his play habits recently. Luke is very interested in building and creating things in contrast to the destroyer that he has been up until know. He patiently builds towers of blocks and is showing a nurturing side to his stuffed animals. They regularly get nappies put on them, offered drinks and put to bed carefully wrapped in his blanket.

No longer a baby he is now looking and acting like a little boy. A very good looking little boy.
I was in Melbourne in May and spent time with him including picking him up from childcare and then we caught the tram to the park. It was good fun and Jocelyn had to ring to get us to come home.
He worked me out very quickly and gave the orders so proving that he has more willpower than me. Some of the things we did we agreed should not be told to his mother.
I wish that I could be with him more often but he has so much love and care with his parents that he can't move to Kalgoorlie.
