Have you heard of kids day?

Mother’s Day is always special in a household of kids.  Our boys plan for weeks in advance and look forward to the Mother’s Day stall at school with so much anticipation.  Alex planned with G that we would have salted caramel doughnuts in bed on the day.  Having breakfast in bed seems to be one of the major drawcards.

Mother’s Day hadn’t even come to a close when Alex wondered why there wasn’t a kids day and started the planning to establish one.  Equal rights in our house!  Kids Day would require that the kids received gifts and got to sleep in the big bed ie Mum and Dad’s bed.  Hmmm.

In the last couple of weeks footy card fever has kicked in.  Linked to the kids at school no doubt.  So with the focus shifting to that I thought Kids Day had been overlooked.  Not so lucky so last Saturday was the day.  The gifts were handed over and the bed swap negotiated on for another night since we were out to dinner and it would be a late night.  The bed swap (Alex says: Papa can sleep in Luke’s bed and Mummy in mine”) kept being bought up and I wasn’t keen at all.  So with the bribe of another two packs each of footy cards it was kind of forgotten.  Not quite… they’ve gone to bed tonight in the study in the sofa bed.

 We’re currently using the Ladder of Doom for bad behaviour.  Bedtime is 8pm and for every offence they slip 15 mins down the ladder.  To climb back up they have to do a job around the house.  It’s working quite well for us!

We discovered that Alex has ripped off a piece of wallpaper from our hallway – done out of spite when he was angry about something he was told to do (or not do).  Punishments were considered.  suggested that it was such a big offence that 12 times down the Ladder of Doom was probably appropriate.  Alex called me back to his room in tears and announced “12 times is not possible, maybe 4 or 5 times”.  That’s one option then we move to taking something away and he says “You can take anything, I don’t care about it. The only thing I care about you can’t take away because it’s Luke!”
